Happy 50th anniversary to the Women Legislators of Maryland, the oldest women’s state legislative caucus! We’ve come a long way toward building a more equitable, just, and representative democracy since they were founded in 1972, but as their recent report highlights, to make more progress, we need to continue listening to and amplifying the work and voices of Black women. As this Washington Post article [[link removed]] states, “If our governing institutions are to effectively address these problems without creating new ones, policymakers may want to listen and join Black women in taking a comprehensive approach to solutions.”

While the 117th Congress is the most diverse in our country’s history, it’s still mostly white and male. The same is true behind the scenes, where congressional staffers are overwhelmingly white [[link removed]] : Black Americans make up about 13% of the U.S. population but only 3% of senior Senate staff and only 2 of the 100 chiefs of staff in Senators’ offices in 2020 were Black. But a lack of diversity is only part of the picture. Hill staffers can make as little as $29,000 a year [[link removed]] —on top of being subjected to a toxic work environment, racism, sexual harassment, and minimal employee protections. Thanks to the Dear White Staffers Instagram account [[link removed]] , this lack of representation and toxic system is finally being called out. What we’re seeing now is a long-overdue reckoning, which has laid bare the truth of what it’s like to work on the Hill.

We have an all-star lineup of trainers, an agenda full of important sessions on how to run a community-centered campaign, and a growing cohort of other New American women who are ready to change the face of leadership.

This past weekend, we had our first in-person training in two years! With a strict set of COVID protocols in place, our Ready to Lead: Southwest training in Las Vegas, Nevada went on without a hitch!
Our amazing trainers, Raquel Castañeda-López , Felicia Singh , and Redmond City Councilmember Varisha Khan were joined by nearly 30 New American and BIPOC leaders from across the region to learn all aspects of running a modern campaign—from developing a stump speech and building a donor base to understanding the endorsement process and developing personal messaging.
