John,
Last night, I delivered my State of the State Address, declaring that our state is strong and growing stronger every day. I talked about all the progress we have made over the last three years and pledged to continue that progress on behalf of Maine people.
Of course, we still have serious and difficult challenges to confront: pandemic-driven inflation is hurting the pocketbooks of Maine people, our long-standing workforce shortage is still leaving employers without the help they need, and the pandemic endures.
But this pandemic has shown that the people of Maine are stronger than they ever could have imagined, and I have never believed in them more than I do now.
If you didn’t have the chance to catch my remarks, I wanted to let you know about some of my plans:
Free Community College: I want to fund two years of free community college for high school students in the classes of 2020-2023 to help them get the skills they need for good-paying jobs and to help our employers get the workers they need.
Surplus Giveback: I want to send half of our surplus back to the taxpayers of Maine through $500 checks.
Student Loan Debt Relief: I want to overhaul our student loan debt relief program to make it one of the best in the nation to keep and attract people to our state.
And that’s just the beginning. From child care, to housing, to broadband, to education – there’s so much more we will do. But all of this represents progress.
And Maine people deserve every ounce of progress we have achieved. More than this, Maine people have earned all the progress that is yet to come.
Let’s get to work, together.
Thank you,
Governor Janet Mills
