TakeAction Minnesota Weekly Wrap

Dear John,

How are you doing? It has been a whirlwind of a week. I’m tracking both movement at the Minnesota Legislature (important bill hearings next week on Paid Family & Medical Leave, expanding MinnesotaCare, redistricting, and more) and the massive Minneapolis resident-led effort filing ethic complaints against Mayor Frey.

Stay tuned for more actions. Let’s get to the Digest.

Here’s what we’re reading, watching, and listening to this week:

1. No-knock Warrants

The family of Amir Locke is calling for accountability and justice. Read and listen to the Locke family’s push to ban no-knock warrants. Email your state legislator now and tell them to pass a ban on no-knock warrants.

2. Minneapolis

“After the release of the body camera footage of Locke’s killing, Mayor Jacob Frey committed to banning no-knock warrants, which allow law enforcement to enter a residence without notifying anyone who may be inside. This might sound like a victory, but it is a distraction; Frey campaigned on having banned no-knock warrants.” Read this piece in Teen Vogue by Minneapolis City Councilor Robin Wonsley Worlobah.

3. Mayor Frey

Read Minneapolis Deserves More than Jacob Frey’s story. Then, read this long-form piece about Frey’s claims to have banned no-knock warrants in The Intercept.

4. Pipelines

A reader flagged this emerging story. Learn more about the awful multibillion dollar carbon dioxide pipelines being planned for Minnesota and the regulatory black hole they fall into in the Star Tribune.

5. Redistricting

Once a decade, after the U.S. Census, new political district map lines are drawn, reshuffling the political cards. Here’s what you need to know about redistricting in Minnesota before new maps are released next week.

6. Childcare

The U.S. is one of the only developed countries that expects parents to shoulder the cost of childcare alone. Read about First Lady Biden’s visit to Minnesota to talk about federal funding and the need for childcare infrastructure.

7. Workforce

This story blew my mind. Since the pandemic, 1.1 million women have left the workforce in the U.S. and haven’t returned. Read about women in the workforce since the pandemic in the Washington Post.

8. Euphoria

So many staff members have been watching the long-awaited second season of HBO’s Euphoria. This piece dives into the extremely realistic portrayal of caregiving in the U.S.

9. Tetris

Just for fun: learn about the mental health benefits of playing Tetris.

10. 250 Things

Loved this viral Medium piece. Check out this list of 250 things to know at the start of a project.

That’s a wrap.
