This Is Our Moment
Policies + People = Progress

With the great American show “The Music Man” returning to Broadway this week, I was reminded of the classic lines

Trouble with a capital "T."
And that rhymes with "P."
And that stands for pool.

“P” also stands for “policies” and “people” and our movement is having a moment right now because of those two “P”s.

What do I mean by that?

Our belief has always been that the country would eventually cry “no more!” over the gridlock caused by the nonstop conflict driven by the far left and the far right.

Americans want Washington to make progress on issues such as competing with China, securing our elections and the right to vote, inflation, crime, immigration, and other pressing matters.

The failure of the titular leaders of both parties to address these issues has the potential to change the incentive structure for D.C. politicians and make two-party solutions more likely.

Now, building off the success of the infrastructure law that was powered by No Labels’ allies, everywhere you look on Capitol Hill there are real policy discussions that start from the premise that the best way – in most cases, the only way – to truly meet our challenges is when members of both parties sit down, start from scratch, listen to each other, and negotiate in good faith.

And the folks who are sitting down and having those serious policy discussions now with a real chance to succeed are, in almost every instance, our allies.

People like Senators Joe Manchin and Lisa Murkowski, who did a rare friendly bipartisan TV interview this week:

You know the other names too, including Susan Collins, Kyrsten Sinema, Bill Cassidy, and our House Problem Solvers Caucus Co-chairs Josh Gottheimer and Brian Fitzpatrick.

These people – our people – have success under their belts, a rhythm of policy communication, and some real momentum.

The more success they have, the more freaked out the extremes of both parties will get. The mean tweets and cable hysteria will be all around.  But we have learned that when our allies combine good policy ideas with the people-power quest for genuine two-party solutions, they are a lot stronger than some nasty shots on social media.

The media is finally noticing all of this; check out these stories on CNBC.com and in Axios (with a shoutout to No Labels) that highlight the work of our congressional allies and the policies they are pushing.

Along these lines, next week, we are hosting an important bipartisan policy event, with Pennsylvania Senator Pat Toomey and former Treasury Secretary Lawrence H. Summers, to talk about the importance of having a Federal Reserve that stays above the political fray.  If your schedule allows, please join us!

The other “people” who are propelling this movement are you, the citizens who with your own (better mannered) social media, your volunteering, your donations, and your activism are making sure our voices are being heard loud and clear in D.C. and around the country.

I am excited about what is happening now and even more excited about what we are going to do together next.

So let’s head into the weekend with another great “Music Man” tune, knowing that our band is getting bigger, louder, and headed towards that third, essential “P” – progress.

There were fifty mounted cannons in the battery,
Thundering, thundering, louder than before.
Clarinets of every size,
And trumpets who'd improvise
A full octave higher than the score!
Seventy-six trombones hit the counterpoint,
While a hundred and ten cornets blazed away.
To the rhythm of Harch! Harch! Harch!
All the kids began to march,
And they're marching still right today!

All the best,

Margaret

Conversation with Former Treasury Secretary Lawrence H. Summers and Senator Pat Toomey

The two will discuss Senator Toomey’s strongly held view that the Fed should stay out of politically charged issues such as global warming and social justice, instead leaving those decisions up to elected officials.

After Senator Toomey lays out his position, he and Secretary Summers will engage in a colloquy on the topic and what should be done to address the issues raised by recent developments.

You will not want to miss this timely and important conversation between two of America’s most thoughtful leaders on economic and government policy
