Dear John,

 

Late last year, two Starbucks stores in Buffalo, New York made history by becoming the first Starbucks locations to unionize.

 

Barely two months later, 78 stores across the country have filed for union elections.

 

Unsurprisingly, Starbucks is deploying an aggressive corporate union-busting campaign. The company even went so far as to terminate seven Memphis employees who were organizing to unionize, and have bombarded workers at a Mesa, Arizona store with egregious anti-union texts.

 

So what’s it really like taking on union-busting from the inside, and kickstarting an historic movement?

 

I had the honor of sitting down (coffee in hand, of course) with three of the baristas — Jaz, Rachel, and Michelle — who started it all and are helping organize stores across the country.

 

If Starbucks workers succeed in forming unions, they have the potential to unleash massive union organizing efforts across the restaurant industry — one of the least unionized industries in the country.

 

I’m so inspired by these courageous baristas. Let’s all show our support.
