Dear John
December is fast approaching, and wildlife rescue centres are anxiously awaiting their licences to rescue and release grey squirrels being taken away.
Natural England plans to revoke all licences to release grey squirrels at the beginning of December. This is due to their ‘non-native’ status. The licences being taken away means that any squirrels brought to vets or rescue centres will either have to be kept in captivity for their entire lives, or will tragically be euthanised.
Grey squirrels are a highly persecuted wild animal, and taking away the already limited rescue licences removes an essential lifeline for them.
This cannot be allowed to go ahead. Please write to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to ask for urgent intervention.
Thank you,
Jade Emery
