John,
While the Vienna negotiations to restore the Iran nuclear deal appear promising, the battle between diplomacy and war continues in Washington. This month is likely to make or break the restoration of the nuclear deal , which would be a critical step towards a brighter future for the people of the United States and Iran.
Last week, Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ)-Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee-launched an attack from the Senate floor against the Biden administration’s diplomacy towards Iran. Instead of diplomacy, Menendez urged Biden to impose more sanctions and threaten Iran with military action. As NIAC’s Policy Director Ryan Costello warned in Responsible Statecraft [[link removed]] , Menendez is reprising his role as chief Democratic saboteur of the Iran negotiations.
With a deal within reach, NIAC and over twenty allied organizations [[link removed]] like J Street, VoteVets, Win Without War, and MoveOn - reiterated our public call on Biden to restore the agreement and lift sanctions. Many more lawmakers came out with their vital support for the agreement, including Senators Chris Murphy (D-CT), Ed Markey (D-MA), Jeff Merkley (D-OR) and Reps. Ro Khanna (D-CA) and Andy Levin (D-MI).
We are approaching a critical turning point where supporters of peace and diplomacy must stand together in order to go up against those who wish to sabotage the deal.
Our efforts over the coming weeks will literally decide between war and sanctions or peace and prosperity. We have won this fight before – and we will win it again – with your help.
