Law Enforcement News 10th-Grader Shot In Alley While Walking Home From School In West L.A. A 10th-grade student was shot Tuesday while walking home from a West Los Angeles school, police said, the latest in a series of violent attacks against students across the city. The Hamilton High School student, who was not identified, was passing through an alley near Reynier Park around 3:40 p.m. when someone in a car drove up to him and drew a handgun, Los Angeles police said. The shooter fired and struck the student, who was taken to a hospital and was said to be stable, said Officer Lizeth Lomeli, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department. Officials with the Los Angeles School Police Department are working alongside LAPD to investigate the shooting, said Sgt. Rudy Perez, a spokesperson for LASPD. What led to the violence was not immediately clear, he said. No suspect has been identified, and it was not known whether the shooter was a juvenile or an adult, authorities said. Perez said there has been an increase in violence across the Los Angeles Unified School District, with many incidents occurring when students are arriving to or leaving campus. A female student at Hamilton High was allegedly sexually assaulted in a restroom in October by at least one male student — a reported attack partially captured on video and circulated to others, law enforcement officials and school district sources said. Los Angeles Times North Hollywood Stabbing Spree Sends Multiple People To Hospital Los Angeles police are investigating after a man stabbed multiple people at two separate crime scenes Thursday. The incident began around 9 a.m. at an apartment complex on the 7900 block of Broadleaf Avenue in Panorama City. The man eventually abandoned the stolen car, which was recovered by police. Inside the car officers found blood from an undetermined source which led to dogs being called to help in the search for the suspect. Shortly after the man ditched the stolen vehicle, he was spotted trying to break into another vehicle at a cigar lounge on the 12000 block of Oxnard Street in North Hollywood. Two employees and the owner of the business confronted the man which led to an altercation that resulted in all three being stabbed by the suspect, officials said. ShotSpotter personnel review and qualify all gunfire reports generated by the system, and a detailed alert is sent to authorities within a minute if a report is determined to be actual gunfire, according to police. “(The system is) a game-changer, especially for those communities most impacted by the violence over the past few years,” Interim Police Chief Cheryl Moody said. “By installing this system, the officers of the Pasadena Police Department will be able to quickly respond, save lives and increase the chance of taking into custody those responsible for the senseless acts of violence.” MyNewsLA.com K-9, Innocent Driver Die When Man Runs Stolen Cop Car Into Train A police K-9, an innocent driver and a suspect died Tuesday night in a train crash in Nebraska. Los Angeles Daily News LA County's Outdoor Mask Mandate Could End As Early As Next Week The number of COVID-19-positive patients in Los Angeles County hospitals fell below 2,500 Thursday, opening the door for a possible lifting of the county's outdoor mask-wearing mandate as early as next week for large events, schools and childcare centers. According to state figures, there were 2,464 COVID-positive patients in local hospitals as of Thursday, down from 2,597 on Wednesday. Of those patients, 492 were being treated in intensive care, a drop from 528 a day earlier. Under guidelines announced last week by county Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer, if the hospitalization number stays below 2,500 for seven consecutive days, the county will lift its mask mandate for outdoor "mega-events" and outdoors at schools and childcare centers. The indoor masking mandate, however, will remain in place until much stricter criteria are met, despite the state of California lifting its indoor mask requirement for vaccinated people next week. FOX 11 ‘We No Longer Have A Fire Season. We Have A Fire Year.’ Heat, Winds Fuel Two Winter Blazes In Southern California Driven by unseasonable heat and gusty Santa Ana winds, two Southern California fires Thursday brought acrid smoke, evacuation orders and flaming fronts — harbingers of a difficult fire year for the parched region. In Orange County, residents of an affluent community awoke to evacuations spurred by the Emerald fire. No homes were damaged, but authorities warned that ideal fire conditions were expected to persist through the weekend. And they also worried about what the coming months could bring. “We no longer have a fire season. We have a fire year,” Orange County Fire Authority Chief Brian Fennessy said. “This is supposed to be the middle of winter, and we’re anticipating 80- to 90-degree weather. Even though the hillsides are green, it doesn’t take but low humidity and wind to cause fires to occur.” “If this is any sign of what’s to come throughout the rest of the winter and spring, we’re in for a long year,” Fennessy added. Los Angeles Times Ahead Of Super Bowl, Californians More Cautious About COVID-19, Poll Shows Super Bowl LVI is arriving as a nationwide coronavirus surge wanes, yet Californians are feeling more cautious about game-day protocols than much of the rest of the country. Some fear the massive sporting event in Inglewood could spark a new outbreak and set back the region’s progress against the pandemic. “I hope it’s not a ‘Super-spreader Bowl,’” Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn said during a news conference this week. “Because that would be very upsetting to all the work that we’ve done, all the sacrifices that people have made — that one game on a Sunday afternoon in L.A. County could in any way negatively impact our progress.” Many Californians are taking measures to keep that from happening: 52% of Golden State residents who plan to watch the Rams-Bengals showdown say they’ll do so alone or with fewer people than normal because of COVID-19 concerns, compared to 41% of people nationwide, according to a new L.A. Times/SurveyMonkey poll. In the Bengals’ home state of Ohio, the number was even lower, 32%. The finding highlights how California’s approach to the pandemic has diverged from much of the rest of the country, including some of the strictest protocols in the nation. It also indicates that the state’s measured approach has trickled down to many of its residents. Los Angeles Times Local Government News Bonin Pushes To Put More Shelters In Residential Areas, Make Temporary Shelters Permanent Councilmember Mike Bonin asked the City Council to allow temporary shelters, like A Bridge Homes and Project Roomkey Hotels, to be made permanent and to amend parts of the municipal code to allow shelters to be built in residential areas next to nonprofit organizations and religious institutions. In a motion submitted this week to the Homeless and Poverty Committee and the Planning and Land Use Committee, Bonin and Nithya Raman stated that temporary shelters for the homeless are allowed on City-owned and City leased properties in any zone, including residential and business, therefore wants nonprofit and religious organizations to be able to do the same. In his motion, Bonin states that the Los Angeles homelessness crisis requires the City to be innovative and cut red tape wherever possible. "The number of people sleeping on our streets every night far exceeds the beds we can offer," said Bonin. Bonin has pushed to have shelters put up in residential areas for years—but, residents say a lack of rules and regulations at Los Angeles shelters, including allowing drug and alcohol use, creates a toxic environment and is not appropriate for residential areas—including near sensitive areas like schools. WestSide Current Raman Seeks Funding To Repair Historic Beachwood Stairs In Hollywoodland Area Los Angeles City Councilwoman Nithya Raman is seeking funding to repair the historic Beachwood Stairs in the Hollywood Hills, which is temporarily closed to the public, the councilwoman said Thursday. “The Beachwood Stairs are a beloved and irreplaceable Los Angeles treasure that deserve to be enjoyed by the public,” she said. “I’m grateful to the Beachwood community for their advocacy and partnership in carrying out this important investment.” The staircase is inside the Hollywoodland area and connects North Beachwood Drive to Hollyridge Drive. The staircase is part of an urban hiking loop that utilizes a series of staircases in the area. The staircase is also part of a group declared a Historic-Cultural Monument in 1991 as part of the designation “Hollywoodland’s Granite Retaining Wall and Interconnecting Granite Stairs.” On Jan. 12, the Los Angeles City Council voted to install a gate to temporarily close the historic Beachwood Stairs in the Hollywood Hills until repairs are made.
