John,
As I travel across Wisconsin, one of the concerns I hear about most is that for too many Washington politicians, everything goes in one ear and out the other. The second they get elected, they forget about the folks who put them there, let alone deliver for them.

The way I see it, a good U.S. Senator is supposed to look out for all of our communities, but Ron Johnson has written most of them off — particularly our rural communities.

That’s why I have spent the past few months crisscrossing the state, sitting down with rural Wisconsinites, and learning more about the challenges they’re facing. Every conversation has informed our campaign agenda, and it’s why we’ve rolled out our rural policy plan — the most comprehensive rural agenda of any candidate in this race.

Having grown up in western Wisconsin, I know that no matter where folks live, they should have access to jobs, education, health care, and the overall quality of life they want and deserve. But they also need a clear sense of where I stand on the issues impacting them most.

So, as we get back on the road to talk about my plan across rural Wisconsin, here’s what I believe we need to do for our communities:
Make the internet a public utility. Everywhere I go, broadband comes up constantly. We have got to stop treating high-speed internet as a nice-to-have — it’s a need-to-have. Unreliable access has left so many of our communities behind, and it’s about damn time we provide all Americans with quality, affordable broadband service.

Broaden access to quality health care. Too many rural Americans can’t find a doctor, access quality medical coverage, find a mental health professional, or afford the prescription drugs they need — and it often means life or death. It’s time to finally expand Medicaid in Wisconsin and other states and provide new federal investments to keep rural hospitals open, protect tele-health access, reduce medical provider shortages, support local economies, and save lives.

Expand education and job opportunities. No one should have to leave their community to obtain a good education, get a job, or raise a family, but that’s exactly what’s happening in rural areas. If we want young people to stay in our small towns, then we need to give them more options by making common sense investments in rural public schools and colleges, apprenticeship programs, farmers and small business owners, teachers’ salaries and school resources — and yes, fixing the childcare deserts in these communities so parents can get back to work.

Tackle the climate crisis and protect natural resources. As I travel rural Wisconsin, concerns about climate change and threats to our natural resources have been a recurring theme. Working directly with rural communities to combat the climate crisis, keep public lands in public hands, and conserve our country’s natural resources will create good-paying jobs, help preserve our outdoor heritage, and protect fragile ecosystems.

Invest in family farms. The consolidation of agribusinesses threatens many family farms — I’ll stand firm against anti-competitive agriculture practices, and support the next generation of farmers with financial support by way of federal investment. Our farming communities also face unique challenges when it comes to mental health, which is why I’ll work to expand access to affordable mental health care, crisis hotlines, and support programs all across rural America.
Our campaign is creating an agenda for all Wisconsinites by meeting folks where they’re at across the state, particularly in places Democrats don’t always go, because that’s how it should be. And it’s what people should expect from their U.S. Senator — someone who shows up, listens, asks how they can help, and delivers results.

We’re starting to roll out comprehensive policy plans based on the issues impacting our communities, and the conversations we’re having on the ground are critical to this effort. Can you split a contribution between my campaign and No Dem Left Behind today to help us keep these conversations going?

If we want to defeat Ron Johnson in November, we’ve got to show up, listen, earn trust, and follow through on our word to rural voters. That’s why this week, we kicked off our statewide rural tour, where we’re going to talk to community leaders and discuss my plan.
We have the opportunity to send someone to Washington who actually listens to rural voices and who will deliver on the issues that matter most to them. As a U.S. Senator, that is exactly what I will do, and it’s what sets me apart in this race.
I’m genuinely proud of what we’re building here, and I’m even more proud of the support we have earned from so many rural leaders in our state — from elected officials to small business owners to community advocates to grassroots supporters. And I’m proud to have the support of No Dem Left Behind.
I can’t thank you enough for your support, and I’ll be in touch again real soon with some photos and stories from the road. Stay tuned!
