John,
There is a moment in the history of Strong Towns that has become legend both inside and outside of the organization.
Andrew Burleson—our Board Chair then and now—was staring at a collection of post-it notes on the wall. On each one was an idea about what Strong Towns could do as an organization. Each note represented an ambition, dream, or aspiration of one of us sitting in the room.
Together, they represented everything that the Strong Towns movement could possibly be.
Our shared objective was to change the development pattern of North America, so there was a nearly infinite list of things we could do. The difficult question was always deciding what we should do. Most pointedly: What do we say "no" to? What opportunities do we pass over and what do we focus on?
What we decided next shaped the trajectory of the entire Strong Towns movement. I wrote an essay about it today that I hope you'll read.
But what I really want to talk to you about is about everything we did in the years since the day we developed the Strong Towns strategy. And when I say "we," I don't just mean the people who were in the room during the fateful post-it note exercise. I mean you, and me, and every Strong Citizen in North America.
It's the third day of our fall member drive. And today, we're going deep into the details of the Strong Towns strategy for creating change—and why it's working like nothing that's ever been tried in America before.
Are you on board with our strategy—and will you be a part of our work?
Let me know.
-Chuck and the rest of the Strong Towns Team.
