THE LATEST FROM UNDER THE DOME

The deadline for bill introduction isn’t until February 18, 2022, but there are already a host of bad bills that GOC is tracking.  We are currently following 17 bills and those of the greatest concern are below.  Bear in mind this list will be updated regularly as the legislature moves further into 2022:

SB 906 (Portantino-D)                   OPPOSE

This proposal is by far the most significant, in that it dramatically steps on the privacy rights of gun owners.  In an attempt to address the problem of “mass casualty threats”, Portantino’s bill would mandate that parents of public school children disclose to the school if they have guns and the specifics of how they are stored.  All this is supposedly in the name of school safety, but this bill would actually treat every school age child as if they are potential shooters.  This is an extraordinary overreach and is an absolute violation of the 4th Amendment. This is a lawsuit waiting to happen and GOC will oppose this most vociferously.

AB 1594 (Ting-D)                            OPPOSE

As introduced, this bill is only a few vague sentences, but it pertains to civil lawsuits relating to firearms.  It states that a gun industry member has created or maintained a “public nuisance” if they have failed to follow federal, state, or local laws that caused injury or death.   This bill could open a very serious door to lawsuits against anyone in the firearm industry.

GUN SHOW SHUTDOWN

The Hefty Lefties in the legislature aren’t giving up on shutting down gun shows in the state.  We are tracking three bills that each go after the “evils” of gun shows in a slightly different way:

AB 311 (Ward-D)                            OPPOSE

This bill is a holdover from last year; it prohibits the sale of firearm precursor parts at the Del Mar Fairgrounds property. This is a piecemeal approach to the anti-gun show scheme.

AB 1769 (Bennett-D)                     OPPOSE

In yet another piecemeal maneuver, this legislation would prohibit the Ventura County Fair and Event Center from contracting for, authorizing, or allowing the sale of any firearm, firearm precursor part, or ammunition.

SB 915 (Min-D)                                OPPOSE

This bill takes the biggest gun show bite, as it would expressly prohibit the sale of any firearm, firearm precursor part, or ammunition on state property. Period.  The success of SB 264 of last year – which banned gun shows in Orange County – clearly emboldened the author, so Senator Dave Min is taking it to the next step:  the entire state.

Currently, we are tracking 17 bills thus far – we are sure more will be added. As mentioned, the deadline for legislators to introduce bills is Friday, February 18, 2022, so we will have a more exhaustive list at that time.  Remember, however, that “spot” bills which have been introduced (placeholder bills with no substantive language) can be amended well into the legislative process.

Making sure that members of the 2A community are armed and informed is one of GOC’s primary goals – the more we all know, the better equipped we will be to battle against the anti-gun war we are facing.  We are stronger together – JOIN US!
