Dear John,
I’m writing to you today to ask you to take action for some of Oregon’s most essential workers– farmworkers. Although they help grow the rich, fresh produce that Oregon is famous for–and the food we all depend on–farmworkers have been excluded from overtime pay since 1938.
Now, Oregon has the opportunity to right this historic wrong by passing the Farmworker Overtime bill (HB 4002), led by our friends at Oregon’s farmworker union, PCUN (Pineros y Campesinos Unidos del Noroeste). Please send an email to your lawmakers and ask them to support the Farmworker Overtime bill [[link removed]]!
Farmworkers have long been excluded from overtime pay due to a racist history–you can learn more in the recording of the Climate & Farmworker Rights Forum we held on January 27th in partnership with PCUN, OEC, Sierra Club, and Climate Solutions, now available on YouTube [[link removed]].
Please send an email to your lawmakers today! In order to make ends meet, farmworkers are expected to go out in dangerous conditions, like wildfire smoke, heatwaves, and ice storms. As climate change progresses, these conditions are only growing more common and more dangerous. It’s time to take a stand and show up for farmworkers. Please send an email to your lawmakers and ask them to pass the Farmworker Overtime bill [[link removed]]!
This bill is one of OLCV’s special priorities for the session. Stronger wages for farmworkers will result in less exposure to hazardous weather, and dangerous climate conditions. Please stand up for farmworker rights today [[link removed]]!
Thank you,
Doug Moore
