We wish we were joking, friend, but here we are.
Earlier today, Iowa Senate President Jake Chapman’s bill to jail teachers and librarians for teaching materials that he considers “obscene” moved out of subcommittee. Now it heads to the Senate Judiciary Committee where it will likely pass to the floor for debate.
Let’s get one thing straight right off the bat here – Jake Chapman does not get to single-handedly declare what is and is not appropriate for our children to learn about.
We live in a democracy where freedom of speech is protected from government interference. And that includes letting our students read books that challenge their point of view, introduce them to new ideas, and help them learn to think bigger than themselves.
If we’re going to give every Iowa child – no matter their ZIP code – the world-class education they deserve, we need more Democrats in office to stop these outrageous bills. Can we count on you to chip in $20.22 right now to elect Iowa Democrats this fall who support our teachers?
We’re fighting tooth and nail for a better future for every Iowan and we need you with us, friend.
