41 percent of Americans consider the media unfriendly to the American people

November 13, 2019: Forty-one percent (41%) of American adults consider the media to be either unfriendly to the American people (21%) or an enemy of the people (20%).

An Economist/YouGov poll found that 42% have the opposite view. They see the media as either a friend (23%) or an ally of the people (19%).[1]

Not surprisingly, there is a huge partisan divide on this issue. Seventy-two percent (72%) of Democrats consider the media a friend or an ally. Seventy-one percent (71%) of Republicans consider the media either unfriendly or an enemy of the people.

Among independents, 33% consider the media to be a friend or ally while 40% say the opposite.[1]

Referring to the media in general terms can be confusing in today’s diverse news environment. ScottRasmussen.com polling explored perceptions of both conservative media outlets and mainstream media outlets. Most Democrats (53%) consider conservative media outlets inaccurate. Most Republicans (61%) consider the mainstream media inaccurate.[2]

Forty-six percent (46%) of independent voters consider both sources unreliable.

ScottRasmussen.com polling also found that 66% of voters believe national political journalists often get important aspects of the story wrong.[2]
