Adam Schiff for Congress

13 seats, John.

That’s how many seats Democrats lost in the House during the 2020 election. Even though we elected President Biden to the White House and gained four seats in the Senate, clinching the majority by one tie-breaking vote, we still lost key races, including many won in 2018 that helped secure our House majority.

Let me be clear — we still have a four-seat majority in the House. Barely enough to pass the American Rescue Plan without a single Republican vote. Not to mention the dozens of House-passed bills subject to Mitch McConnell’s filibuster — for voting rights, a $15 minimum wage, the Equality Act, paycheck fairness, background checks, D.C. statehood, the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act — you name it, and the House has likely already done it.

And it’s crucial that we hang onto our majority in November so we can continue our work fighting for progress, building our Senate majority so we can abolish the filibuster, and pass this legislation to President Biden. But the odds are stacked against us. The president’s party typically loses an average of 26 seats during the midterm elections.

John, we don’t have 26 seats to spare to keep Democrats in power and Kevin McCarthy away from the Speaker’s gavel. We need to help new and incumbent Democrats win their races so we can keep McCarthy from getting anywhere near setting the House’s legislative agenda.

There’s no question that the GOP will block every bill possible if they reclaim the majority, and McCarthy is already threatening to strip me of my committee assignments if he becomes Speaker. It would also pave the way to his ability to overturn the next presidential election if Trump loses, and would pose a grave threat to our democracy. Clearing the way for an authoritarian dictatorship. So we need to fight back. Now.

I’m personally asking — can you make a small monthly donation to my campaign to help me win my re-election and support House Democrats running across the country? It’s crucial we help Democrats win key races to protect and strengthen our House majority.
