Defending Democracy: Addressing the Dangers of Armed Insurrection
One year after the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, EFSGV issued a report with five policy recommendations for states to implement immediately in order to protect democracy in the face of a growing armed insurrectionist movement. The January 6 attack on the Capitol was the loudest expression of a continuing effort by armed insurrectionists to upend government policy through political violence and intimidation. The report offers new insight and analysis and serves as both an examination and a warning that, if left unaddressed, armed insurrectionism will continue to pose a threat to the country. It also examines the significant overlap between insurrectionist activity and white supremacism and the deadly combination of guns and hate.

CDC: Gun deaths reached record highs in 2020 — along with gun sales
Gun deaths in the U.S. reached the highest level ever recorded in 2020, claiming the lives of more than 45,000 Americans, according to newly-released data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). A review of the CDC data by EFSGV found that the increase is driven by a dramatic rise in gun homicide – nearly 5,000 more gun homicides than 2019 – and a persistently high number of gun suicides. The increase coincided with a record increase in gun sales in 2020, and was not confined to cities or particular parts of the country. There were some stark disparities, though — Black Americans experienced far higher rates of gun deaths than their white counterparts.

EFSGV Recognizes Black History Month and recommits to centering impacted communities in the fight against gun violence.
On the first day of February, the Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence marked the start of Black History Month by acknowledging the ways gun violence disproportionately impacts Black Americans, and reiterating the organization's commitment to advocating for equitable solutions to the gun violence epidemic that center the lived experiences of impacted communities. Later this month, EFSGV will be making an announcement about new efforts to center equity in gun violence prevention advocacy.

Two years later, Colorado’s Extreme Risk Protection Order law is saving lives
Colorado’s Extreme Risk Protection Order has been a life-saving tool to reduce the public health epidemic of gun violence in the state. On the anniversary of the law’s implementation, Colorado gun violence prevention advocates are calling for increased education about the availability of the tool. In an effort to further education about ERPO, Colorado Ceasefire and EFSGV worked together to create a public awareness video about the ERPO process in Colorado.

Tennessee should not miss out on the opportunity to fund gun violence prevention
CSGV Student Organizer Cierra Hinckson was published in the Tennessean writing about the state’s reluctance to put federal funding towards gun violence prevention efforts. The state received more than $6 billion in funding from the American Rescue Plan (ARP) to distribute as it sees fit, and still has nearly $500 million unallocated. As Cierra writes, “Tennessee needs significant investment in evidence-based community violence intervention programming. With just $10 million, just 2% of the $494 million in unallocated ARP funds, the state has a chance to veer away from failed tough-on-crime measures by directly investing in the communities most impacted by violence and the often under-funded and overworked organizations that strive every day to make them safer.”
