Team – a year ago this week, I proudly served on the team of House Impeachment Managers that prosecuted Donald Trump in the Senate for his role in inciting a mob that stormed the U.S. Capitol building.
Just a month prior to the start of the Senate trial, we all witnessed the horrific events unfold. And like so many others on that day, we all asked ourselves – how did we get here?
That was the central question my colleagues and I worked tirelessly to answer. We worked night and day because we knew we had a responsibility not just to explain what occurred – but to hold those responsible accountable.
Unfortunately, not all in the Senate agreed on who was ultimately responsible. At the end of the trial, while a majority of Senators voted to convict, 43 senators chose to side with Donald Trump and refuse to accept what really occurred – a deliberate attempt to overthrow a presidential election.
Despite this, I accomplished so much during that trial. I became only the second Black woman to ever serve on an impeachment team, and as a representative of a majority Black part of our country, I represented a part of America Donald Trump consistently attacked as president, and I am proud to have been their voice in the Senate Chamber.
One year later, the investigation continues. My colleagues on the January 6 Committee are working every day to piece together every single detail, so that the American people know everything that led to that day and most importantly, to ensure it does not happen again. I am proud of their work and support them as they continue to move forward.
Friends, as we move forward from the attack, we can’t stop until we know the entirety of what occurred. But as the midterm election inches closer, and Republicans are threatening to shut down the January 6 Committee if they take back the House, we need to stick together and defend our Democratic majority.
