ICYMI: Michigan’s Tampon Tax, which considered feminine products a luxury good rather than recognizing them as essential items, has officially been repealed! And, to no one's surprise, female legislators were the reason this happened.

State Representative Padma Kuppa, who reintroduced the bill to repeal the Tampon Tax, stated, “this is how FEMALE advocacy turns into law.”

Michigan voters have elected women at unprecedented levels, and the true representation is now paying off. Unfortunately, there are 27 states that still have this sexist and oppressive tax.

Before the repeal, Michigan collected $7.7 MILLION from the tampon tax, which meant an average woman was paying about $300 in sales tax on tampons every year. According to Lysne Tait, Executive Director of the nonprofit Helping Women Period, “One in four Michigan menstruators cannot afford enough product every month, preventing them from working and going to school. This is an economic cost we all bear.”

We are seeing the encouraging results of female leadership in Michigan. But across the country, women are still being left out of critical conversations that affect their everyday lives.
