A few days ago, I was doing research on "net zero" policies for an
upcoming campaign. Here's what happened when I typed "net zero" into
Google, John:

What I thought was a popular resource on net zero policies actually turned
out to be an ad for Shell. That's right,
John. Just take a look for yourself:

Despite what this ad says, Shell is not moving toward net-zero. Not even
close. But since these ads look like normal Google results, they can
easily confuse the public into believing that fossil fuel companies like
Shell are adapting to meet the climate crisis.

Shell is only the tip of the iceberg. New research has found that 1 in 5
ads served on search results for 78 climate-related terms were filled with
ads by fossil fuel companies. The fossil fuel industry’s disinformation
campaigns are insidious, and it is one of the single greatest threats to
our climate movement.

But here's the good news: we are not afraid to confront the fossil fuel
industry head on. That's why we are running our own ads promoting real
solutions and honest information about the climate crisis.

But in order to counter Big Oil’s disinformation, we need a lot of
grassroots donations to be able to fund these ad campaigns — which is why
we need your help. [ [link removed] ]Will you chip in
$3.50
— or whatever you can — so we can fight the oil and gas industry’s
disinformation campaigns with the truth?

Here's just one example of the type of ads your
$3.50
contribution will go toward supporting:

We can't afford to sit this fight out. Because in all honesty, companies
like BP, Shell, Exxon, and Chevron will not stop greenwashing on platforms
like Google, Twitter, and Facebook to convince the public they’re part of
the solution and “doing good” for the climate. As long as they are the
only ones running ads, people will continue falling for their propaganda.

It's time that we run our own ads to expose their lies. We're already
calling on the Federal Reserve to stop financing fossil fuels. We're
petitioning media platforms to stop greenwashing. We’ve already sent
petitions calling on Google and Facebook to stop publishing climate
disinformation Now, we're fighting back directly on the fossil fuel
industry’s own turf — on Google Ads.

[ [link removed] ]John,
can you make a
$3.50
contribution today so we can fund our own ads to combat the fossil fuel
industry’s disinformation? The more ads we can afford, the faster we can
stop them.

None of this work would be possible without you. Thank you for rising up
and pitching in what you can to support our movement.

In solidarity,

Emily Southard
