This week, news broke that Donald Trump routinely ripped up documents while serving as President, and even took fifteen boxes of records to Mar-a-Lago upon his electoral defeat by President Joe Biden.
In doing so, Trump knowingly violated the Presidential Records Act, which requires Presidents to preserve their documents for record keeping and preservation by the National Archives. The question now is: What was an already twice-impeached President trying to hide?
Violating this act is a callous anti-democratic move by the former President, but that should come as no surprise. This behavior is also part of a larger trend by Republicans to evade accountability for their actions. Whether it is Trump shredding documents in the Oval Office or the Republican caucus calling the violence they incited on January 6th “legitimate political discourse”, the GOP continues to refuse to take responsibility for their damaging actions.
As Democrats, and as the majorities in the House and the Senate, it is our responsibility to hold them accountable. But they are doing everything they can to evade responsibility.
To right these wrongs and to ensure that public servants are held to the highest standards of transparency and accountability, Democrats must not only protect our majorities, but also expand them.
Nobody is above the law, especially those who make them. With your help, Democrats can hold the House and make sure that Republicans face consequences when they break the law.
