John,
Occasionally I would show up to a varsity soccer game and one of the players on the opposing team would be assigned to mark me. I trained hard for those games. As soon as I realized that someone was going to be tracking me all over the field, I made it my job to get them to ask for a sub.
One game, the opposing coach decided to have two players mark me. Every time I got the ball, they would start screaming my name. It frustrated a lot of my teammates because the coach's strategy wasn't to out play my team, it was to psych me out. And frankly, it was a dirty move. In a moment of annoyance, one of my teammates screamed at the ref that the other team was trying to get in my head. I locked eyes with one of the girls marking me and called to the ref over their noise, "it's alright ref! I like my name!"
The girls didn't say another peep the rest of the game. At halftime, one of my teammates asked me if our opponents screaming my name had bothered me. I said of course it had. But I wasn't going to let them see me sweat.
