For those struggling to make ends meet during this pandemic, January 15th marked the beginning of a return to poverty.
This is happening because last year, the Senate failed to renew the Child Tax Credit expansion, and last month marked the first time in six months that 36 million families did not receive the monthly payments many of them needed to keep the lights on or put food on the table.
When the expanded Child Tax Credit was first passed in the American Rescue Plan because of Suzan’s leadership, it put a major dent in inequality and lifted 3.8 million children out of poverty. We cannot let those 3.8 million kids down now.
We cannot emphasize enough how important the Child Tax Credit is. Since the start of the pandemic, children and families of color have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19, and those with low wages have been hit hardest by the resulting economic impact.
These are the same families for whom — pandemic or no pandemic — every day can be a crisis.
Families have relied on the payments of the expanded Child Tax Credit to feed, clothe and safely house their children. But no help came this past month because we let the expanded credit expire during an unprecedented surge in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations.
Thank you for joining us in the fight for our families and communities.
