Friend, for too long, politicians have promised progress in the fight against climate change. But the effects of the climate crisis are impacting Marylanders now, and it’s more clear than ever before that those promises have been hollow.

As governor, I will ensure that Maryland steps up as a national leader in the fight against climate change – and I’m committed to doing just that now as well. The crisis demands immediate action, which is why this Saturday, I will be joining the Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN) and taking the Polar Plunge into the Chesapeake Bay to show just how far (and how cold) I’m willing to go to protect our environment. 

Protecting our state and our world from the effects of climate change is something that I believe in wholeheartedly, and as the most climate forward candidate in this race, I am ready to do whatever it takes to bring awareness to the issue — even if it means jumping into the Chesapeake in the freezing cold. Just like a charity fun run, plunge participants take pledges from their friends and family to support their polar plunge and CCAN’s vital work.

We cannot continue allowing the adverse effects of climate change to put our state in danger. Maryland can lead the way in addressing the climate crisis, providing an example for others to follow, but we need to take action now. From protecting and restoring the Chesapeake Bay, to cracking down on polluters, to becoming one of the first states to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions, to ensuring stakeholders from communities historically affected by pollution and environmental injustice have a role in decision-making – together we can tackle the challenges of the climate crisis head on.

Everyone deserves to live in a healthy and clean environment, no matter their income or zip code. As governor, I will fight to make this happen for Marylanders. Can I count on you to join me?
