Friends —
Four years ago next week, a kid walked into a Florida high school with an AR-15 and killed almost 20 of his classmates while wounding many others.
First, let’s be clear:
Those of us who have served needed a background check to carry similar weapons in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is complete lunacy to suggest anyone can buy that weapon at a gun show or on the internet without a background check.
But even crazier was the Republican response to the tragedy: arm teachers.
Let’s be clear, it takes a tremendous amount of repetitive training to carry that weapon in the military or in law enforcement. The idea that the 3rd grade Social Studies teacher is gonna take down an active shooter with a handgun in his desk is nuts. That teacher is going to die as well.
Veterans know this.
We know these weapons were created for the purpose of killing as many people as possible as efficiently as possible. And we know they have no business on our streets — especially without passing a background check.
So as we approach the Parkland anniversary, we are asking you to make your voices heard:

The NRA likes to say the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. We have a better idea: expand background checks and assault weapons so law enforcement aren’t outgunned in our communities.
