| We're calling on the Biden administration to protect all mature and old–growth trees throughout our federal forests. |
| Protecting these trees is one of the most cost–effective climate solutions available. |
| Today, we are pushing the Biden administration to do more to meet the moment and address climate change by preventing logging of our carbon–rich old–growth and mature trees in federal forests nationwide. These forests, classified as climate forests, store more carbon per acre than tropical rainforests, which means protecting United States forests is an essential part of meeting our commitments under the Paris Agreement. |
| Protecting them does more than store carbon. For some Indigenous communities, these forests support a cultural heritage stretching back thousands of years. Logging will decimate areas vital to culture, heritage, and ecosystems in places that tribes have stewarded for millennia. For instance, the Tongass National Forest, an old–growth forest in southeast Alaska, has been stewarded by the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian peoples since time immemorial and they have been a crucial part of the fight to protect the Tongass from logging. |
| Safeguarding old–growth trees in federal forests is also a key solution to confronting the planet's extinction crisis, as they are home to many unique and sensitive species. Establishing permanent protections is directly in line with the Biden administration's goal to protect 30 percent of lands and waters by 2030. |
| These climate forests are also more fire–resilient than the small trees that grow after logging, meaning these trees can help protect communities from wildfires, which are becoming more frequent and severe due to climate change. |
