February is Black History Month and I hope to see you at our CADEM Celebrates Black History Month event tonight. This month has always been special to me but this year even more as it’s my first year without either of my maternal grandparents who both passed away last spring. The more I learned about Black American history, the more questions I asked them about their lives before I came into it.
I’ll never forget my grandfather telling me about being stopped by the police on the Westside of LA on his way home from his second job as a janitor at University High School in 1965 on the night the Watts Riots began. Or my grandmother telling me about being turned away from the employment office paid for, in part, by her tax dollars because she was “colored.”
Hearing those stories made me understand why voting was so important to them. My grandfather looked at every piece of political mail and wanted my opinion on candidates and measures.
To think that the law that made it illegal to impede the right to vote has been weakened by the Supreme Court sickens me. Every article I read about Republican efforts to make it harder to vote in state after state enrages me.
That’s why our Voter Protection team is so important. We need trainers to help us build the most diverse team possible to ensure that every Californian is able to exercise their right to vote.
We also need Democrats to Contest Every Race possible. We’re partnering with the DNC to host a boot camp for candidates. If that’s you, sign up. We need you.
We also need people to join the fight against the Republican attack on women. We hope you join us for our Women’s history month event on March 1st to hear how many amazing Democratic women leaders are doing just that. Our mighty women’s caucus has planned an inspiring event that you won’t want to miss.
Similarly, our CDP Secretary Melahat Rafiei has planned our first ever Nowruz event to celebrate the Persian New Year. If you know Melahat, you know it’s not to be missed.
I know that many of you miss our JEDI discussion series. I know because you tell me often. It’s coming back. We just needed to recruit a few more facilitators. Can we count on you? In closing, I want to say thank you for all you do to fight for our democracy. We Democrats believe in democracy for all, not just some. My grandparents really helped me to understand that. Who inspired you? I’d love to read your stories about who motivates you as I shared about my grandparents.
Warmly,
Vincent Jones Training Director + Senior Advisor Our Democratic leaders are working hard to make California a better place to live. From fighting for good-paying jobs, combating climate change, to expanding healthcare access so all Californians can lead safe, healthy, prosperous lives — California’s Democratic leaders turn progressive ideas into meaningful action.
