It is with a heavy heart that I announce my retirement. 2021 was extremely difficult for my family as my father’s cognitive health deteriorated rapidly. I truly believe that the lack of social stimulation, due to the pandemic, aided in the deterioration. For more than 10 months I have been trying to get help through our Medicaid system and I’ve finally gotten to the point where getting him help has to be my full-time job.
I must point out that it is a sad day in America when a person has to quit their job to navigate our healthcare system! I cannot imagine what a person without my resources does in this case - if they do not have the luxury of simply retiring.
That is what makes all of this so difficult. Prior to my dad’s decline, I had no intention of going anywhere. I was in for the fight so consequently, I’ve been training Karin Asensio to take my place since early last summer! Karin, our Deputy Executive Director, has my full confidence to step into the role of Executive Director.
For those who truly know me, you know that my goal is always to leave a situation better than I found it, and I hope that I have done that. I know that because of many of you, I have grown tremendously; and for that, I thank you!
So long, but not goodbye,
Halisi
