Friends,
Every right in this country is built on the right to vote, but Republicans have been focusing all their time and energy over the past few years to weaken that right for voters they see as “unfriendly”. That’s why Democrats have made voting rights a top priority, passing multiple voter protection packages in the House.
But once again, Republicans have blocked sensible voting reform in the Senate. No one should have their right to vote threatened, but groups like the LGBTQ community will be disproportionately impacted.
Trans people are at risk when rigid voter ID laws are passed which don’t account for the difficulties of changing gender markers on IDs. LGBTQ youth who experience homelessness or LGBTQ elders who lack family support will find it harder to navigate new rules that are intentionally complicated. And LGBTQ people of color will bear a greater brunt of racist policies such as removing precincts from predominantly Black neighborhoods.
Every citizen of this country has the right to vote and to have that vote counted. Any Senator who stands in the way of voting rights should be held accountable. These laws target vulnerable populations instead of giving them equal footing at the ballot box as our constitution intends.
