Tomorrow, Republicans in the Kansas legislature will be holding hearings on multiple voter suppression bills. Contact your legislator by Thursday, February 10th and let them know why you stand against these bills and the attack on democracy!

This comes after last year's slew of voter suppression laws passed by Kansas Republicans that will disenfranchise Kansans in the upcoming elections. This session, not much has changed. Republicans are continuing to try to pass unnecessary, strict voting laws that make it harder to vote and perpetuate the Big Lie.

Here's what's on the docket for this week:

  • SB 388: Requiring USPS for mail in ballots, therefore restricting the use of dropboxes for mail in ballots
    • How it harms: Limiting the use of secure ballot drop boxes for mail in ballots makes it harder and less accessible for Kansans to submit their ballots, especially the elderly, the poor, people of color, working families and those in urban areas. 
  • HB 2570: Increased election audits to promote the Big Lie
    • How it harms: Kansas already has audits — or reviews — of our elections. The Republican-led Secretary of State's Office even declared Kansas' elections are safe and secure. This bill is nothing more than Kansas Republicans fueling the Big Lie and scaring the public.
  • HB 2555: Purging voters 
    • How it harms: Purging Kansans simply because they haven't voted in recent years is undemocratic, and the "use it or lose it" policy is especially harmful towards minority groups and students who could be wrongly purged. Voter purges are incredibly dangerous: they can kick off voters if they have the same name, get rid of multiple voters all at once, and voters typically don't find out they were purged until Election Day — by then, it's too late to register in Kansas. 

Here's what you can do about it:

Contact your legislators to let them know you stand firmly against these voter suppression bills! Here's what you can say: 

Dear [insert Representative/Senator name]

I am writing to you today to express my concerns on [bill number]. This bill is completely unnecessary, and makes it harder for Kansans to participate in our democracy. Our elections are safe and secure, so the legislature should be more focused on expanding voting, rather than preventing it. This law especially hurts communities of interest, the elderly, the poor, students and others. I'm urging you to not support this bill.
