Wednesday, February 9, 2022 | The Latest Research, Commentary, And News From Health Affairs
Dear John,

Earlier this week Health Affairs published its February issue, Racism & Health.

Coinciding with the release of this issue is a video interview with guest Harriet A. Washington, author of Medical Apartheid: The Dark History of Medical Experimentation on Black Americans from Colonial Times to the Present.

In the interview, Washington discusses the history of racism in medicine and research with Vabren Watts, Health Affairs’ director of health equity, and Aletha Maybank, chief health equity officer and senior vice president of the American Medical Association.

Systemic Racism And Health
In an overview paper in the Racism & Health issue, Rachel Hardeman and coauthors describe methodological approaches to measuring structural racism and its health effects.

They propose that future research incorporate approaches for quantitative and qualitative measurement of structural racism, its intersections with other systems of oppression, and its impact on public health.

The approaches outlined by Hardeman and coauthors include seeking out new data that capture understudied aspects of structural racism, examining how structural racism interacts with individual-level characteristics in shaping health, and cultivating community-based participation.
Today in Health Affairs Forefront, William Rosa and coauthors discuss how access to and the quality of palliative care are not uniform across society: Racially minoritized communities have historically been excluded, in part due to structural racism.

If you're enjoy reading Forefront, check out some of the additional topics covered including health spending and global health policy.
