Thousands of Nevadans will receive more than $18 million in student loan relief after our team helped achieve a $1.85 billion settlement with Navient over allegations that it pushed student loan borrowers into forbearance — an option that was good for their corporate bottom line — instead of income-based repayment plans, which were best for students.

State Attorneys General have a significant role to play in addressing the student debt crisis, and in helping consumers make smart decisions when it comes to borrowing for their education.

I am responsible for enforcing consumer protection laws, and I’ve met too many people who simply wanted to get a good education, but instead had their financial futures ruined at the hands of student loan servicers like Navient.

My team routinely receives complaints from borrowers who are unable to navigate the existing complex repayment and loan forgiveness plans — and when they are unable to manage student loan repayment, it can be catastrophic to their finances and nearly impossible to escape.
