Throughout the year, AWP works to support women and help get them elected to office. Last year, we endorsed 17 women candidates – and all of them are serving in Congress today!
Every month, we will be celebrating some of our previous and future endorsements. In honor of Black History Month, we are starting this series by uplifting two incredible women we endorsed last year! We’re thrilled for you to get to know our first woman in the House, Lucy McBath.

District Highlight
After flipping a seat that had been held for 40 years by a Republican, Democrat Lucy McBath was able to win in GA-06!
Why They Ran
Congresswoman McBath’s career as an activist developed following the death of her 17-year-old son, Jordan Davis, in 2012, in what became known as the “Loud Music Shooting.” She became determined to do everything in her power to prevent other families from experiencing the same tragedy that she did. Prior to running for Congress, she served as a national spokesperson for Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action.
The Congresswoman is also a two-time breast cancer survivor and knows personally the importance of covering those with preexisting conditions and increasing accessibility to quality and affordable health care.
Leadership in Action
Congresswoman Lucy McBath sits on the House Committees on Education and Labor and Judiciary. She also serves as Vice Chair on two additional working groups, the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force and the Congressional Caucus for Women's Issues.
After the tragic school shooting that occurred in Michigan just last November, Congresswoman McBath delivered powerful remarks on the house floor: “Do you have the courage to do that? To feel what it might be like to bury your child? To suffer with your God day after day to make sense of the senseless, unnecessary gun violence? Do you have the courage to do what is right? To save our children?”
Lucy McBath brings a moral authority to her service in Congress. Her passion for justice, born from her deep faith and the anguish of losing her only child to gun violence, has elevated her voice and helped push through the first gun safety legislation passed by Congress in decades.
