Friend,

Yesterday was the 118th anniversary of the Alabama Constitution — a document that was written essentially to stop African-Americans from voting. I wanted to take a minute and share Doug’s message to Alabama with you and tell you why it’s so important not just for Alabama, but for our country.

Keep Doug in the Senate >> [[link removed]]

When Doug’s opponents have their primary in the spring, they’ll be choosing from a slate of candidates who are either trying to make it harder to vote or who already have. Voting rights are on the line next year, and Alabama could be the state that decides who’s in charge of the Senate.

So we’re asking you for two things. First, check your voter registration or register to vote for the first time, no matter where you are. Second, please help us win Alabama. We’re going to put everything we can into voter registration, hiring and training field staff, and giving resources to volunteers. Please chip in whatever you can — every little bit counts — and we’ll put it toward a victory. [[link removed]]

Friend,

My team and I took yesterday to reflect on Veterans’ Day and the immeasurable sacrifices made by servicemembers and military families throughout our history. All too often, we have failed to treat our veterans and their families with the respect and dignity that they deserve — including the basic rights afforded to American citizens.

Yesterday was also the 118th anniversary of the 1901 ratification of Alabama’s Constitution.

The problems in this document are too long to list in one email, but here’s a quick summary: This Constitution was written with the explicit purpose of disenfranchising black citizens. For decades, black veterans were not able to participate in the very democracy they fought to defend. Their widows and children grew up in a society that denied them the rights of American citizens. And the rest of us, particularly rural Alabamians, lost important political rights as well.

We’ve made progress since then — significant progress. But we’ve also been forced in the wrong direction at times. Whether it’s court cases that make it harder to vote, driver’s license office closures, or a failure to stand up and protect us from foreign interference, voting rights are on the line today. And, sadly, some of my opponents have been on the wrong side of this issue — repeatedly.

I’m not asking for your vote right now. I’m just asking that you do vote. Make a commitment to vote in every election, not just mine. Then, check your voter registration. We need your voice, friend.
