Dear Ward 8 Residents:

I am concerned about the renovation planning and repairs at 800 Southern Avenue Apartments, formerly known as Park Southern. Residents voiced concerns about the properties renovation schedule, rodent infestation, hazardous material abatement removal, unmet maintenance repairs, and water and heating system issues.

Following these concerns, I joined Anthony Diallo from the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA) Ram Uppuluir from the Office of Councilmember Anita Bonds, and Erin Wilson from Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) at 800 Southern Avenue Apartments for a site inspection. I was not satisfied. As your Councilmember, I take residents' concerns as a top priority. I hold our government accountable to ensure residents have a place to live that is safe, sanitary and complies with legal requirements.

Residents east of the river must have equitable housing. Every agency responsible for delivering the renovated property at 800 Southern must be held accountable to ensure that residents have a safe and sanitary place to raise their families.

I want to thank everyone that joined the 800 Southern Apartments virtual meeting. My staff and I will continue to be your advocates until all residents are made whole.

Peace and love,

Councilmember Trayon White, Sr.

Councilmember Trayon White attends the MORCA-Georgetown Paralegal Program Graduation Ceremony.

On February 4th, Councilmember Trayon White attended the graduation ceremony for The Mayor’s Office on Returning Citizen Affairs (MORCA) and Georgetown’s Paralegal Program. This program trains highly experienced previously incarcerated individuals for a successful legal career.

The program launched in 2019 and is supported by the DC Department of Employment Services (DOES).

Participating Fellows earn a certificate in Paralegal Studies from Georgetown through an intensive 16-week program. After completing their training, Fellows are matched with top law firms and other employers in D.C. for one-year paid fellowships.

The D.C. Council on Tuesday approved a $309 million contract to upgrade the city’s 75,000 streetlights with high-efficiency LEDs and Wi-Fi access points.

The streetlights are also expected to have environmental benefits. According to D.C., replacing the fixtures will cut energy use for streetlights in half, cutting back some 38,000 tons of annual greenhouse gas emissions. Still, some critics worry that the LED lights will create too much light pollution and disturb both human sleep patterns and local wildlife.

The contract ultimately passed with 10 lawmakers voting in favor, and only Mendelson and Councilmember Vince Gray (D-Ward 7) opposed. Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie (D-Ward 5) recused himself from the debate and vote because his cousin is linked to one of the subcontractors on the project. (“He made this decision because it is critical that the residents of D.C. know that their government operates with the utmost integrity,” his office said in a statement.)
