John, Twelve years ago, the Supreme Court opened the floodgates for corporations to buy our elections and silence the will of the American people. In doing so, the Justices also created a massive loophole for foreign influence in our elections. Federal law clearly states that a foreign national or entity cannot interfere with U.S. elections, but if these foreign powers have significant ownership in a multinational corporation spending money in our elections, that federal law is completely undermined. Sign the petition: ban foreign-influenced corporate spending in our elections. Our democracy was intended to be by and for the American people alone. Now, with the help of Free Speech For People’s model legislation, policymakers across the country are taking action: - The New York State Senate just passed the Democracy Preservation Act with bipartisan support, putting it on track to be the first state to outright ban corporations with significant foreign ownership from contributing to candidates, parties, or committees (including super PACs) or from engaging in their own direct election spending in state elections.
- California Assemblymember Alex Lee introduced the “Stop Foreign Influence in California Elections Act” this week, which would prohibit multinational corporations from spending money to influence state elections.
- On the federal level, Congressman Jamie Raskin introduced our model bill in the House of Representatives in December. Closing this loophole nationwide would be a major step forward in the movement to get big money out of politics and restore democracy to we, the people.
If you support our efforts in New York, California, and Congress to put an end to foreign-influenced corporate spending in elections, sign the petition. Americans have lost a say in our own republic, and we must do all we can to reclaim our democracy. Banning multinational corporations from pouring unlimited sums of money into our elections gets us one step closer to a democracy that is truly by and for the people.
