Friends -
Late last year, I introduced a bill called the “Polluters Pay Climate Fund Act.”
The idea is simple:
Those who pollute should pay into a fund that helps us finance a wide range of efforts to tackle climate change. And those who pollute the most should pay the most.
The legislation would generate about $500 billion over ten years and the largest polluters — we’re talking companies like ExxonMobil, Shell, and Chevron — would pay about $5 billion a year. For most of the largest payers, it’d be less than 3% of their gross receipts.
A small price to pay to help clean up the mess they’ve made.
This legislation has the support of the League of Conservation Voters, the Sunrise Movement, Chesapeake Climate Action Network and more.
But it needs your support too. Because making the largest polluters pay will never happen unless we demand it. So I am asking:
CO-SPONSOR THE BILLFor years, fossil fuel companies have made TRILLIONS in profits while wreaking havoc on our environment, harming public health, and threatening the very livability of our planet for future generations.
It’s time for them to pay their share of the clean-up bill.
Onward.
