Friends,

The opening line from a Slate article delivers the bad news with blunt force: "On Monday afternoon, the Supreme Court crushed yet another key component of the Voting Rights Act, halting a lower court order that required Alabama to redraw its egregious racial gerrymander."

Outrageous? Yes.

Shocking? Sadly, no. The Supreme Court in recent years has taken every opportunity to weaken the Voting Rights Act.

It's time to push back. Congress should strengthen the Voting Rights Act so that no court can again water down its protections. The last time Congress reauthorized the Voting Rights Act the vote was 98-0 in the U.S. Senate. If you agree Congress should act, add your name now →

The Alabama plan crammed the vast majority of the state's African-American voters into a single new congressional district even though Alabama's census numbers would have justified two majority African-American districts.

The lower court panel (in which two of the three judges were Trump appointees) had invalidated Alabama's plan as a violation of the Voting Rights Act. But the Supreme Court, led by the five most conservative justices, came to Alabama's rescue. So, the racially polarized Alabama map will be in place for the 2022 election.

It’s time for Congress to act. We have to try to rescue the law from irrelevancy - and banish blatant racial gerrymandering forever. Add your name now → [link removed]

Thanks,

Steve
