John,
Donald Trump was warned over and over and over.
And yet he continued to destroy official records right up until the end of his presidency, even placing some shredded records in “burn bags” to be permanently destroyed.
This isn’t just outrageous—it’s also likely criminal. Yesterday, CREW and the National Security Archive sent a complaint asking the Department of Justice to investigate Trump’s destruction of records.
It’s far from the first time we’ve taken action on this issue—at the end of the Trump administration, we sued the Trump administration for failing to comply with the law requiring the preservation of messages sent on unofficial accounts by top officials, just one of several legal actions we took against Trump and his administration for violating records laws. We now know that even amid that lawsuit and warnings by top officials, Trump tore up documents in his final weeks in office, and even took 15 boxes of presidential records with him to Mar-a-Lago after leaving office.
It’s clear that Trump thinks the law doesn’t apply to him. But it does—and it’s time for the DOJ to make it clear that he isn’t above the law by fully investigating him for these likely crimes.
Thank you,
Noah Bookbinder
President, CREW
