John,

Last month, news broke that Stephen Breyer would retire from the Supreme Court, ending a near 30-year career as a stalwart liberal justice of the court. His retirement allows President Biden to not only appoint a new progressive justice but also make good on a campaign promise to nominate a Black woman. [1]

We are thankful to Justice Breyer for recognizing this indelible moment in history and we look forward to seeing which of the many qualified potential justices will be nominated by Biden. Give now to support our work.

We also wanted to take some time to reflect on Justice Breyer and his legacy in protecting abortion rights. Over his tenure, Breyer wrote majority opinions for major wins for abortion rights, striking down an abortion method ban and laws demanding overbearing restrictions on abortion clinics. [2]

But now, we must go further. Abortion access is eroding before our eyes and Roe will likely not be around to celebrate its 50th anniversary. We are urging Senators to act without delay and secure a progressive Black woman nominee who will embrace abortion as a human right. We are mobilizing – won’t you help support it?

Sincerely,

Erin Matson
Executive Director, Reproaction

P.S. So many things hang in the balance – voting rights, LGBTQIA+ rights, abortion rights, and more. Help fight for the future of the Supreme Court.
