Dear John,
In a blow to the gun industry, Sandy Hook families will get their day in court. This morning, families and survivors from Sandy Hook won a huge victory when the U.S. Supreme Court allowed their lawsuit against assault weapon manufacturer Remington to move ahead. This is a landmark moment in the fight to take assault weapons off our streets.
Remington made and sold the Bushmaster AR-15-style assault rifle, which was used to murder 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The case argues that Remington recklessly marketed the deadly Bushmaster to civilians. Its aggressive “Man Card” campaign specifically targeted young men with violent tendencies. Visitors to the Bushmaster website were greeted with a “manhood” quiz and were told that acquiring a Bushmaster rifle will get you your "Man Card Reissued.”
The Bushmaster rifle was designed for the military. It’s a weapon of war — its sole purpose is to kill and maim many people rapidly — and it never should have been marketed to civilians like the Sandy Hook killer.
Brady’s legal team assisted in the lawsuit and blazed the trail that helped move the Sandy Hook families’ case forward. For decades now, we’ve been fighting in the courts to set legal precedent, support victims of gun violence, and hold the gun industry accountable for its role in gun crimes.
Will you help us keep up the legal fight against gun companies and others who recklessly market assault weapons?
Today’s Supreme Court victory sends a clear message: irresponsible gun manufacturers don’t get a free pass. Please help us keep up the fight. If we can put an end to dangerous business practices, we can create a safer America.
Thank you for all you do,
Jon Lowy
