February is Black History Month.
I've always held close to my heart the stories of my ancestors. I am where I am today because of them. Our great country is full of those stories – stories of struggle, of striving, and of success. Those stories are Black History, and we are better for them.
I also want to take time to reflect on the state of our country and the ways the Black community still faces injustice.
From blatant attacks on our voting rights to healthcare disparities made worse amidst the pandemic to the mistreatment of Black folks in our criminal justice system – it’s clear that much more work needs to be done to reach true equality and equity.
I’ve been proud to champion the issues affecting Black Americans in Washington, and I’m going to continue to fight to make sure the next generation doesn’t have to.
This Black History Month, I’m going to shine a light on some of those Black men and women who have strived to make our country better for all people and to ensure that Black history continues to be made each day.
Thank you,
Lisa
