We must put a stop to these short-sighted decisions when it comes to the conservation and protection of endangered wildlife like the gray wolf.
John —
In the final hours of Trump’s presidency, he made the confounding decision to remove the gray wolf from the endangered species – even though gray wolves only occupy 20% of their historic range. And the consequences of his actions have been deadly.
Last year, Wisconsin allowed for a hunt of 200 wolves during its hunting season but ended up overhunting that threshold by 86% within 60 hours. In Idaho, the legislature passed a bill to reduce the gray wolf population in the state by 90%. And just last month, an entire pack from Yellowstone National Park was deemed “eliminated,” with only 94 gray wolves remaining on the park grounds.
This severe ramp-up of gray wolf killings across the West makes it clear that the decision to remove federal protection came much too soon.
That’s why SEEC Member Rep. Don Beyer wrote a letter along with 78 other lawmakers urging Interior Secretary Deb Haaland to temporarily restore protections for the gray wolf. Even with SEEC members sounding the alarm, still, nothing has been done to protect the gray wolf from more mass killings.
Gray wolves are a vital part of the ecosystem. They keep grazing animals in check, which helps protect naturally growing trees and plants. But without protection, they could go the way of the Red Wolves in the eastern United States, where only an estimated 20 wolves still roam.
