Governor Wolf just announced his proposed FY22 Budget — and we’re thrilled to see that he wants to make substantial investments in our parks, polluted rivers and streams, cleaning up abandoned mines, and preserving farmland.

 

Our state and nation are facing a climate crisis, and Pennsylvania must support efforts to protect our land and water from the disastrous effects of climate change caused by polluting industries.

 

If the legislature follows through on Governor Wolf’s proposal, $450 million could be set aside for the Growing Greener program — investments for Pennsylvanians that would create green jobs, stimulate local economies, and reduce the risk of flooding.

 

The only problem is, there are some lawmakers who don’t support these environmental priorities and will try to block them. That means it’s going to take all of us to put pressure on the state legislature to take Governor Wolf’s lead and make this vision for Pennsylvania a reality.

Governor Wolf’s budget proposal also includes desperately needed investments in the departments of Environmental Protection and Conservation and Natural Resources, agencies whose budgets have been cut by the legislature year after year. State lawmakers have repeatedly punted on cleaning up our water, maintaining our parks and forests, addressing environmental injustices, and transitioning workers to good-paying clean energy jobs by not fully funding these agencies to adequately do their job. In the process, they have refused to invest in the future of every single Pennsylvanian. 

 

Governor Wolf’s proposal would put environmental watchdogs back in action and give the state more resources to hold polluters accountable, protect our clean air and water, and preserve our farmland, state parks, and forests.

 

At a time when the pandemic has highlighted the importance of open space, Pennsylvania must take advantage of this historic opportunity to utilize existing federal recovery money to reduce maintenance backlogs in our state parks, improve the quality of our rivers, clean up abandoned mines, and preserve our open spaces. 

 

It’s now up to our lawmakers to follow through and support Governor Wolf’s proposal of increased funding for conservation and water protection initiatives that can help mitigate the harmful effects of pollution in Black and Brown communities. If the state legislature does not fund these priorities and instead continues to hold these funds hostage, it will hurt Pennsylvania’s families and businesses, and further stall progress on ensuring a cleaner, healthier future for our state.
