Dear Friend,
I've been watching what's going on at the State Capitol, and I'm outraged. Republicans are rushing an abortion ban through the legislature without public input. Two weeks ago, a House committee cut off testimony and kicked people out of the room who had come to share their personal stories.
This dangerous bill is now making its way through the Senate, moving even closer to becoming law, despite the fact that it’s currently unconstitutional under federal guidelines.
There is no such thing as a reasonable abortion ban. This bill doesn’t allow for any exceptions after 15 weeks, even in cases of rape or incest. During the bill's first Senate hearing last Wednesday, Senator Lauren Book, a Ruth’s List alumna, proposed an amendment to allow abortions after 15 weeks in cases of rape, incest, and human trafficking. Despite emotional testimony from a rape and incest survivor, the amendment was struck down.
With more Senate hearings to come, we have to stay vigilant. Even if amendments manage to pass, a ban is still a ban, and it would take freedom away from millions of Floridians.
We must remember, abortion bans are politically-driven attacks on reproductive freedom, and we can’t stay silent.
If you’re able, please consider becoming a monthly donor today to help us in this fight.
We can’t afford to waste any time.
