Jack, we all knew this was coming. Are we surprised we have a book ban? Nope. Is the book ban trash? Yep.
If you hadn’t heard, Haywood County School District superintendent Bill Nolte pulled Dear Martin from 10th-grade English classes at Tuscola High School after just one parent complained about the book. He didn’t even read the book. Why bother when the title is called Dear Martin?
This work matters, y’all. It truly, truly does. Local elections matter. Education matters. Knowledge matters. The First Amendment matters. Voting matters. Elected officials dictate what children learn – and we are the ones who vote them in. If Black and Brown folks were represented in the seats of power in Haywood County, this would not be happening. We can promise you that. Can you make a $15 contribution so we can get voters of color out to the polls?

Racism walks loud and proud. Who can overrule the racist superintendent who banned a book about a young Black man dealing with racism in his community while trying to emulate Dr. Martin Luther King’s teaching? The school board. Will the Haywood County School Board tell this man to un-ban this book? They sure won’t. Who can change all of this? Voters of color.
Can you rush a $15 contribution right now and stand on the right side of history with us? We are rushing to register as many Black and Brown voters as possible. Everything is on the line this year, and we have got to get this work done now.
