Hi John,

The first ever Black History Month was celebrated this month over 50 years ago, and this is a time for us to honor Black history, Black contributions, and Black lives.

I often think of a quote from my friend, John Lewis, who said "Ours is not the struggle of one day, one week, or one year. Ours is not the struggle of one judicial appointment or presidential term. Ours is the struggle of a lifetime, or maybe even many lifetimes, and each one of us in every generation must do our part."

That's why we absolutely cannot limit this fight for racial equity to February alone. And that's what I have long fought for with my time in Congress, and along with Congressman Lewis – to ensure every American has the right to use their voice.

Last year, we saw the deadly consequences of what happens when our democracy and voting rights are challenged. Voter suppression efforts all across the country instituted unnecessary voter ID laws, reduced access to early voting, and severely limited mail in voting – and that was just the beginning.

Now, primary elections in many of our states are fast upon us, and we are seeing in real time the consequences of these discriminatory actions play out at the ballot box. Now, there is no doubt that these challenges to our right to vote disproportionately target Black communities, as well as other communities of color, students, seniors, and folks with disabilities.

That is precisely why I acted with the House to pass legislation, in Congressman Lewis’ honor, to preserve our right to vote by expanding voting access, including vote-by-mail, eliminating discriminatory voter roll purges, and making Election Day a federal holiday so we can all take the time to make our voices heard. But last month, the Senate voted to allow procedure to stand in the way of voting rights, again.

So, we must fight on – not just today or this month, but every day of every month until all of us have access to the same rights and can use our voices without fear.
