The decision to participate in the COVAX effort was an easy one — when children are in crisis, UNICEF is there. Even before the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global health emergency, UNICEF had already rushed six metric tons of medical supplies to the front lines.

But distributing COVID-19 vaccine doses equitably is one of the biggest logistical challenges in history. So with the world’s largest humanitarian warehouse in Copenhagen, powerful partnerships and our history of vaccinating nearly half of the world’s children every year, UNICEF and partners charged boldly towards our goal of delivering 4 billion COVID-19 vaccines around the world.
Here are the most recent updates on our efforts:

-
As of Jan 15, 2022, 1.13 billion COVID-19 vaccine doses have been shipped through the COVAX facility to 144 countries.

-
Vaccine developers have reached more new supply agreements to facilitate faster transport and delivery of vaccines.

-
Multiple countries have been able to reduce the time between the first shots and the booster to combat rising Omicron infections.

-December 2021 saw the highest number of doses shipped through COVAX with a record 306 million doses, compared to 155 million doses shipped in November 2021.

-
The United States has donated more than 5 million doses and facilitated 27 million doses to 37 countries through COVAX.

For 2022, UNICEF’s COVID-19 response will be a two-pronged all-hands-on-deck approach. Because of the compounding effect the pandemic has had on other humanitarian crises, UNICEF’s response will prioritize protecting children, keeping them learning and supporting their health and nutrition. Second, UNICEF and partners aim to accelerate supply availability of COVID-19 tests, treatments and vaccines through groundbreaking global collaborations.

Vaccinating the world against COVID-19 is a once-in-a-lifetime challenge, but with the help of our partners, UNICEF is determined to see this mission through and rebuild a better future for every child.
