AMP Condemns Israel’s Latest Assault on Gaza
(WASHINGTON, D.C. 11/12/2019)—Once again, Israeli politicians have attempted to score political points at the expense of Palestinian lives. Since last night, Israel has killed Palestinians in indiscriminate air raids on their homes while injuring scores more, proving yet again that Israel is incapable of living in peace and calm with its neighbors. American Muslims for Palestine condemns this latest unprovoked attack on Gaza and its people.
The recent aggression appears to be instigated by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in his efforts to force a unity government with Benny Gantz, the head of the Blue and White party. Two Israeli legislative elections this year failed to give either the Likud party or the Blue and White party a decisive majority to form a government. Gantz rejected a unity government in which he would rotate premiership with Netanyahu. Netanyahu’s political future hinges on him remaining in power and passing a law in the Kensett that would grant him immunity against the serious corruption charges he is facing.
As is often the case during election season in Israel, politicians will cynically attack Palestinians to rally and solidify their base of support. This latest assault in particular demonstrates Israel’s moral bankruptcy as quiet and calm were largely maintained by the armed Palestinian factions in Gaza as a result of Egypt’s brokered indirect mutual understanding. Palestinians in Gaza are adhering to the tacit truce despite the brutal and an inhumane blockade they have suffered for more than 12 years now.
In sum, this latest bombing campaign is a desperate show of political expediency by Netanyahu but written with the blood and misery of innocent Palestinians. The world and the U.S. can no longer ignore the crimes perpetrated by Israel and we must call on our elected officials to halt military aid to Israel. AMP will continue to closely follow any developments out of Gaza in hopes that the situation does not escalate.
Please stay tuned for our 2020 Palestine Advocacy Day "Save the Date" announcement as we continue to build on the momentum of our flagship program to change biased U.S. foreign policy.
