We cannot wait any longer. Congress needs to reinstate the expanded Child Tax Credit so we can erase child poverty, end child hunger, and give a tax break to families with children — period.

The Child Tax Credit expansion was one of the most impactful measures of the American Rescue Plan , putting up to $300 per month per child into parents’ bank accounts — cash that millions of American families used to pay for things like daycare, gas, and groceries. For low-income families, this tax cut was a game-changer: studies found that the expanded Child Tax Credit was cutting child poverty by almost 50 percent.

It’s morally obscene that the richest, most powerful country in the world has one of the highest rates of child poverty among developed countries.

An extra $250 or $300 per month for each kid is the difference between a single mom with two kids being able to afford a one- or two-bedroom apartment. Seriously, have you seen how much diapers cost? These payments kept millions of children out of poverty, helped families pay for food and utilities, and provided necessary financial stability. Not to mention, it injected billions of dollars into the U.S. economy — putting it on the fast track to recovery.

We’ve already waited too long to extend the expanded Child Tax Credit and families are struggling. We must reinstate this tax break for families with children to end child hunger, tackle child poverty, and help American families deal with rising costs.
