Subject: We need paid family leave
Team,
It is no secret that COVID-19 has exposed a lot of what has not been working in this country, and one of the most glaring systematic failures I see is the lack of paid family leave.
The United States is just
one of seven countries in the world that do not federally guarantee any paid family leave to new mothers. Our neighboring country, Canada, and other allies to the United States have paid leave related to giving birth to or caring for a child. In the United States, unfortunately, having a child is a reason why many people are forced out of their jobs and succumb to poverty.
Most people in the United States who don't have paid leave are people who are working in low-wage jobs. Employees in these roles have scrambled for child care since the beginning of the pandemic, and no one has come to their rescue as they have to make tough choices to keep their families above the poverty line.
We should not be leaving new families to juggle being a full-time parent and working a low-wage job. Instead, we should be
uplifting, empowering, and supporting families.
It's time to make a change, team. Can you please add your name next to mine and demand Congress help support families by expanding and strengthening family medical leave in the United States?
I am a proud original co-sponsor of the Family and Medical Insurance Leave Act. This legislation would create a national family and medical leave insurance program to support our workforce. Working families will be allowed up to take 12 weeks of paid time off to accommodate for childbirth or a serious health condition, as well as to care for a new child or for specific military caregiving and leave purposes.
This much-needed family leave expansion would allow public employees, as well as private sector and self-employed workers, to take time away from their work to tend for their families and themselves.
We cannot lead with love in our communities if we cannot help foster the growth and support our families deserve first. It's on us all to take care of each other.
Our country has an opportunity to join the world's leaders and guarantee paid medical leave for its workers. Please, take a moment and sign our petition calling on Congress to pass this much-needed legislation and bring equality to our workforce >>
